Everybody's got a vinegar recipe for salt stains. It's cheap, it's in the cupboard, and it sort of works — which is the problem. It loosens what's on the surface and leaves the rest behind.
Road salt is hygroscopic — it pulls moisture out of the air and holds it. Once it works into carpet fibers, it forms a crust that grabs dirt, grit and whatever else comes in on your boots. Every melt-and-dry cycle binds it tighter.
